How You Can Save on Upgrading Your Smoke Alarms

We’re hearing reports daily from frustrated landlords who have been quoted a small fortune to upgrade their smoke alarms in their rental properties. We may be able to help you save money!

Did you know you can upgrade your smoke alarms yourself (wireless alarms only)? They don’t need to be installed by an electrician or technician - just DIY and save.

Firstly, determine if you need hardwired or wireless smoke alarms.

How? Gently unscrew an existing smoke alarm base from the ceiling and if there are wires attached to your mains, then they must be replaced with hardwired photoelectric interconnected smoke alarms and you must employ a licensed electrician to do the upgrade.

Secondly, work out how many alarms you need.

The Queensland legislation states:

  • Smoke alarms must be located in all bedrooms
  • Smoke alarms must be installed in hallways connecting bedrooms to the rest of the dwelling
  • If there is no hallway, between the bedrooms and the rest of the dwelling; or
  • If there is no hallway between the bedrooms and other parts of the storey; and
  • If there are no bedrooms on a storey at least one smoke alarm must be installed in the most likely path of travel to exit the dwelling.
  • Please also be aware that study’s, rumpus rooms, sleep-outs, converted garages etc. that house a bed (even temporarily) or sofa bed will also require a smoke alarm installed.

There maybe instances where you have existing hardwired smoke alarms that need replacing AND new smoke alarms required in other parts of the house. Yes, you can have both!

Replace hardwired smoke alarms with hardwired smoke alarms and also purchase wireless interconnected smoke alarms for other required areas in your property. In order to interconnect, these hardwired and wireless smoke alarms MUST be the same brand, and in some instances, you will also require a wireless base or radio frequency module (of the same brand) to enable all smoke alarms to properly interconnect.

Once you have determined the type and number of smoke alarms needed, choose from our three brands of smoke alarms:

The Red range have a higher humidity rating (usually better suited to Far North Queensland) and are UL Internationally Tested (which also makes them Queensland compliant being to Australian Standard 3786:2014). A benchmark in safety and recognised as a quality provider.

The Emerald Planet (EP) range are also of Australian Standard 3786:2014, and are very reputable having serviced the Aussie market for well over 10 years. This new range includes the Wireless Ranger and Vulcan 240v series which is an exciting new edition to the Evadare site.

The Evadare Wireless Smoke Alarms are a great value range and are super-easy to install. The range is manufactured to Australian Standard 3786:2014. Perfect for the installation of numerous Smoke Alarms in your rental properties and own home. We’re able to offer our Evadare range at a lower price because of the volume we have manufactured, enabling us to pass that saving onto the customer.

Once purchased, we’ll ship them to you for FREE and you can either DIY install or hire your preferred licensed electrician to do it for you.
